XPath Versions

XPath 1.0
XPath 1.0 was released as a W3C Recommendation 16. November 1999.

XPath 2.0
XPath 2.0 became a W3C Working Draft 20. December 2001.

XPath 2.0 is a language derived from XPath 1.0 and XQuery. The XPath 2.0 and XQuery 1.0 Working Drafts are generated from a common source, sharing much of the same syntax, and much of the text is identical.
